He often tells stories of relatives and friends who ended up in prison, or who worked for the mob, or of bar fights and scraps he got into. He'd rather be playing a game of craps in some dirty alley or eating a hot dog at a Mud Hens game than anything in the world.

It takes a lot to put a guy like that in a dress.

He knew in his soul that he wasn't meant to be a soldier. He hated authority and hated the thought of killing anyone even more. Most of all, he didn't want to die in some crummy war. So he did everything he could to be rejected at the draft office. He drew measel spots on his face, stuck his finger in a pencil sharpener, ate the thermometer, and licked the doctor's ear, among other things. Somehow, he was still sent to Korea. Thankfully, at least, he was put in a M*A*S*H unit instead of in combat. Even so, he didn't want to be there.

During his entire stay at the 4077th, Klinger comes up with scheme after scheme to get sent home or just run away back to the states. None of them work, but he never gives up. He's extraordinarily persistent in the face of rejection. If someone tells him no, he turns around with an "Okay, well how about this?!" He makes no attempts to hide it, either. One constant in the camp is Klinger's zany attempts to be labeled a bona fide nut job. He'll often keep up schemes for days at a time, no matter how absurd. Like the day he spent caring for an invisible camel who would drag him around, spit on people, and make messes for him to clean up. There are several occasions where said persistence has unintended consequences. More than once he's ended up as a patient, by trying to eat a jeep or nearly giving himself hypothermia, for example. Once, he accidentally did something good, when his pole sitting plan resulted in setting a camp record. That one didn't get him a discharge, but he did get some R&R.

He learns how to sew so he can make his own dresses and costumes. Throughout it all, though, he always tells anyone who asks that he's a "real man" and that it's a dodge. He's very quick to deny any interest in men, and corrects any Korean youngster who calls him "mama-san." He is incredibly dedicated to the craft. He goes to great lengths to find new patterns and get fabrics. He even proclaims he fought his way through snipers to get to a clothing store in Seoul. He wears dresses and nightgowns when when he's alone. He also genuinely seems to enjoy making extravagant looks. It's entirely plausible to think that he truly likes wearing women's clothing, it's just completely unacceptable in that time period.

In addition to dresses and costumes, he also regularly tries to lie and scheme his way out of the army... Or to riches, whichever comes first. The camp has had to learn to take his stories with a grain of salt. He regularly tries to lie about dead family members, or household tragedies to garner sympathy or get a ticket home from the Red Cross. He also tells some pretty crazy stories, many of which sound like they're exaggerated, if not completely made up. On top of all of that, are his schemes. Not all of his schemes are lies, though. Often times they're a little wheeling and dealing. "You get me time in Tokyo, I'll get you a hairdryer." Things like that. There's also the time he used a family member's pull to get an application to West Point in the hopes of getting kicked out of there. He's rarely idle. When not on KP, guard detail, or working with the wounded, he's coming up with or executing his latest plans.

How can a man be simultaneously cowardly and brave? Somehow Klinger manages it. He's absolutely a coward. He didn't want to join the stupid war to begin with. He's terrified of dying and would be the last to volunteer to do something that could put him in danger. That is... Unless someone is wounded or someone he cares about is in trouble. There are several occasions where he's been laid up because of some scheme or another, but the moment wounded start pouring in he jumps out of bed to help. The wounded come first, period. He may not volunteer to go into danger, but if he's pushed into it he steps up to the plate. On guard duty, he was once called into the operating room when a North Korean patient jumped up and grabbed a scalpel. The patient swipes at him, severing the strap of his dress. Instead of panicking, he snaps at the patient for destroying his clothes before raising his gun to show the patient who's boss. At another time, Father Mulcahy asks him to come on a drive with him to get some Penicillin, which had recently been stolen from them. When he was told they might meet some "shady characters" he laughs and tells him "half of my mail is from death row." They end up stealing from the black market under sniper fire. Thankfully, the only casualty is Klinger's skirt. When ordered to cover up when they return, he announces that he is covered. "Covered in glory!" He may be trying to do anything he can to get out of the Army, but he would never do anything that intentionally puts someone at risk. He will literally give someone the dress off his back if they need it more... Unless he can get something out of the deal. What? He can be selfless sometimes but that stuff wasn't cheap!

No matter how hard the universe tries to kick Maxwell Q Klinger down, he always manages to bounce back up. He had to. If you didn't bounce back up on the streets of Toledo you'd get run over or kicked in the gut! It's made him incredibly resilient in the face of adversity. He has his low moments, certainly. One of the worst moments in his life was when his wife left him for a sausage maker, taking all of the money he'd sent her. He went AWOL and tried to run home to talk to her. But as he was waiting for his flight, he was able to cool down and realized that he was better off without her. He returned to the 4077th, resolved to find someone better for him. Sometimes that cooling off period is accompanied with a large amount of alcohol, but that's typical for almost anyone in the camp. Whether the cushion is time or booze, Max always manages to get back up, unscathed and ready for more.

He might be a lying conman, but he's also a genuinely good person at heart. He knows when to drop the act and bare his heart to those closest to him. He cares deeply for those at the 4077th. Some more than others, of course, but when Klinger loves, he loves deeply and truly. Losing the love of his life nearly destroyed him. He also has an incredibly deep love for his mother. He didn't want her to worry about him, so he never actually told her that he was going to Korea. He told her he was still at Fort Dix, NJ, and even went so far as to take hundreds of pictures of himself there to send to her. Because no matter how brash he acts, he's a loyal puppy at heart. He just wants to find a woman who will love and care for him as much as he'd love and care for her. When he falls, he falls hard. Sure, sometimes a man just needs a one-night fling, but if he thinks finds Ms. Right, one night just isn't enough. Possibly most importantly, though, is his love for the others at the 4077th. He openly tells them (even if he's usually drunk when he does) that he loves them. They're his friends, his family, and he holds every one of them dear to his heart. They bring him joy in an otherwise miserable time. He shares that joyful nature with others whenever possible. Sometimes it's by joking with the patients, or making fun of what passes for food in the mess tent, but sometimes it's just a smile and a kind word. He'll walk around singing, or try to find other ways to brighten up the dismal morale about the place. Honestly, for someone who says he hates the joint, he smiles more than a lot of other people there.

On the flip side, he's also got a fiery hot temper. He'd attribute it to his Lebanese heritage. If you cheat him, or betray him, you can kiss your teeth goodbye. He's not afraid to use his loud mouth or his fists to get his point across. He has manners, though, he'd never hit a lady. It doesn't take much to get Klinger fired up. He regularly snaps at people and walks off in a huff when he's offended. Insult the food when he's in a rotten mood while manning the chow-line? He's bound to bite your head off and slam things around. In many ways, his reactions are very immature. A prime example is when B.J. is trying to set up a get together for all of their families back home. They were going to take a picture in front of the Welcome to Korea sign. Because he thought his Mom didn't know he was in Korea, his reaction was to snap "Alright, then my parents can't come!" before storming off. Instead of verbalizing the problem and finding a compromise, he reacted very childishly. It wasn't unlike a small child stomping their feet and leaving because they don't want someone else to play with their toys.

Klinger is a messy, complicated guy with a lot of layers. He's a man so dedicated to drag that he knows all of the proper rules for dressing. And yet he'll kneel down and play craps for hours and pummel someone for using loaded dice. He's a good man who wants to help people, he just doesn't want to do it in a war zone. Is that so wrong?

5-10 Key Character Traits:
-Cowardly
-Brave
-Persistent
-Scheming
-Liar
-Loyal
-Loving
-Resilient
-Hot-tempered
-Joyful

Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character’s personality, CONFLICTS with it, EITHER, or opt for 100% RANDOMIZATION? RANDOM!
Opt-Outs: Not Arachne or slime

Roleplay Sample: TDM

comments
